Why Acting Classes Can Help With Anxiety & Social Confidence

September 25, 2026•3 min read

Sometimes the hardest part is simply walking through the door. Being in a new room, meeting people you don’t know, or getting up in front of others can feel like a lot, especially when your mind is already busy wondering, “What if I mess up?” The funny thing about confidence is that we don’t usually find it before we try something. We start building it because we tried.

A lot of students walk into acting class feeling nervous or unsure of what to expect. Then they read a line, try an exercise, maybe stumble a little, laugh, and keep going. That’s part of the process. No one has to get everything right the first time. The more students participate, the more comfortable they can become, and that’s often where confidence starts to grow.

For a student who tends to hold back socially, those small experiences can mean a lot. Maybe the first step is simply introducing themselves to a scene partner. Then it ight be reading a few lines aloud, volunteering for an improv game, or performing in front of the group. Each experience gives them another chance to become a little more comfortable being seen and heard.

Acting also offers something unique because students don’t always have to speak as themselves. They get to step into a character, explore another point of view, and communicate through someone else’s story. That can take some of the pressure away and make expression feel more approachable. A character may be excited, frustrated, nervous, confident, funny, angry, or completely confused. Exploring those emotions gives students a creative way to think about how people communicate what they’re feeling.

And acting requires real interaction. You can’t build a scene without paying attention to the person standing across from you. Actors learn to listen, notice body language, respond to tone, make eye contact, and stay present instead of simply waiting for their next line.

Improvisation takes that even further. There isn’t always time to come up with the perfect answer. Students have to listen to an idea, respond to it, and keep the scene moving. It can be fun, unpredictable, and a good reminder that conversations don’t have to be perfect to work.

Performance nerves can become part of the experience too. A student may still get butterflies before standing in front of the class. Acting doesn’t promise to make those feelings disappear, but it can help students discover that feeling nervous doesn’t always have to stop them from participating.

Instead of thinking, “I have to stop being nervous before I can do this,” they may begin to realize, “I’m nervous, but I can still give it a try.”

At JDS Creative Academy, we believe students should have space to learn and participate at their own pace. Some people jump into an exercise right away. Others prefer to watch for a little while before stepping in. There’s room for both. Growth looks different for everyone.

And for actors who are ready to take that next step, JDS Actors Studio gives them another place to keep building those skills through more focused stage and on-camera training. Whether someone is just starting or looking to strengthen their technique, the same idea still applies: confidence comes from doing the work, staying present, and giving yourself another opportunity to try.

Acting classes aren’t a replacement for professional mental health care when someone is dealing with anxiety, but they can provide a supportive creative setting where students practice expression, listening, communication, collaboration, and being present with other people.
